Lent

For when you feel: lent, ash wednesday, fasting, forty days

And rend your hearts, and not your garments and turn to the Lord your God: for he is gracious and merciful, patient and rich in mercy, and ready to repent of the evil.
Joel 2:13 · Douay-Rheims

The MinuteHomily

Jesus walked into the wilderness for forty days, and Lent walks in after Him. But the prophet Joel names the season's real target. "Rend your heart, and not your garments," he says, because torn clothes were the ancient theater of repentance, visible and dramatic and cheap. God asks for the tearing nobody sees, the honest opening of the heart's locked rooms. Whatever you set aside these weeks, chocolate, screens, a comfort, the fast is only scaffolding; its purpose is to make room and hunger for God Himself. And read the rest of the verse before you dread the beginning. You are turning toward a God who is "gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness." Lent is not a season of divine scowling. It is a long walk home to a Father already watching the road.

A prayer for this moment

Lord, rend my heart this Lent, the real one, not the performance. I turn toward Your kindness, forty days at a time. Amen.

“Fasting cleanses the soul... prayer gives it wings.”

One small step

Pick your fast, and pair it with an equal add: the time or money it frees goes to God.
